I’ll never know for sure, but I know when I touch something I created with the chemistry of my kitchen, I feel a smidgen of warmth and love, as I feel a wave of motherly ecstasy when I hug my child; I have a small bit of that satisfaction when I eye my baked goods.

When they are eaten, though, I don’t think of it as death. That bread is being broken down in the bodies of the people I love, the glucose created by the disintegrated carbs feeding the cells in the bodies I hold most dear. I had the privilege to spend a few days working with the Emotional Coding Lab at Stanford last month and got just a small taste of the training required to actually use this. Let me tell ya…it doesn’t come very easy. To be certified to use the system in research, you have to undergo something like three hours of training a day for 30 days, and there are only about 500 of these trained researchers in the world. If a government employee is going to use this system to screen for and potentially accuse me of a crime, they’d damn well better be at least as experienced as that.
